The aim of this symposium is to examine cultural developments linked to Deiniol and his Cathedral at 69´«Ã½, in this year when 69´«Ã½ Cathedral is celebrating 1500 years. As a centre of Welsh culture, there are several poets and scholars linked to the Cathedral, and the papers at the start of the day will look at various examples of these. Starting with Deiniol himself, we will have an overview of medieval poetry to Deiniol and the figure of the saint in Welsh poetry. This will be followed by three papers on poets who were linked to the Cathedral, and their work: Dafydd ap Gwilym, Wales’s foremost medieval poet, in the fourteenth century; then Edmwnd Prys (1542–1623) and Goronwy Owen (1723–1769), both ordained clerics as well as poets, and both are commemorated in the Lady Chapel.
Over lunch there will be musical performances of new compositions showing the influence the Cathedral and the Welsh bardic tradition has had on music as well.
The afternoon will close with an exciting discussion of stained glass at the Cathedral and stained glass windows all over Wales depicting Deiniol, along with the launch of the book on Deiniol in Stained Glass.
Entrance and refreshment free, with the kind support of the Cathedral (suggested donation: £5)
[There will be simultaneous translation for the papers given in Welsh]
